FAQs
What is counselling?
American Counseling Association defines counselling as "... a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education, and career goals."

However, we would rather use John McLeod's definition as he describes the process from a client's perspective. Counselling is a process where a person facing a personal or psychological issue invites another to form a particular kind of professional relationship that can be helpful. This relationship provides conditions like empathy, undivided attention, unconditional acceptance, and confidentiality which might be hard to find in the everyday life of the person. Such a space can support the person engage in constructive dialogue to gain insight, awareness, and skills they deem necessary.

I am a bit unsure about starting this process. What would a session look like? How would we start?

It is absolutely normal to be unsure. Sharing intimate details of our lives with a stranger is daunting, uncomfortable and weird. Moreover, the uncertainty of what might unfold in the counselling process can be scary. It might be helpful to remember that counsellors are trained to support clients through this process.
In the beginning, we would get to know each other a little and discuss the whys, whats, and wants. How this would specifically play out during the session is unique and dependent on the two persons in the counselling space and the context. It is important to note that the process is completely voluntary. Your comfort and consent are a priority.

If you are still uncertain or have other concerns, reach out. We will do our best to address them with more specificity.

Who is your service for?

Our counselling service is for adults over the age of 18 without a current diagnosis of severe mental disorder or psychiatric disorder. We are not a crisis service and are unable to accommodate persons currently at risk of suicide. Please refer to the 'Further Resources' page to find an appropriate service.

What is the 'Pay what you can' policy?

Our standard fee is Rs. 1200/- per session, but we realise this may not be affordable for everyone. Therefore, we offer a ‘Pay what you can’ policy where clients can pay what they can afford, starting from as low as Rs. 600/- per session. Reach out if this is still unaffordable or if you require further clarification. We will do our best to support you.

How will my confidentiality be maintained?

The counsellor and client will enter a confidentiality agreement before starting the sessions. This ensures that your identity, privacy, and session contents are protected and kept confidential. We will ensure clients are fully aware of the details before sessions start. All client and session data is stored on password-protected drives (online and offline).

Occasionally, the counsellor will discuss the sessions with their supervisor or peers to obtain guidance. In such cases, identifying information will be anonymised.
